Gray Catbird or Northern Mockingbird?

Recommended Posts

The only time I got busted by a reviewer was when I posted a Gray Catbird photo as if it were a Northern Mockingbird, so I want to be careful here. ?   Merlin and iBird Photo Sleuth have a difference of opinion, so I'm stumped.  Taken this afternoon in Boynton Beach, Florida:

One more bump, as I don't like to come across as illogical.  I had mentioned Gray Catbird in the original post, as Merlin incorrectly Identifies the bird as a Gray Catbird, however, the Ebird photo entry that I corrected was a Gray Kingbird that I had posted as a Northern Mockingbird.  Edit - iBird Photo Sleuth correctly identifies the Northern Mockingbird.

Tougher discernment between NOMO and Gray Kingbird it would seem, although I've never seen a Gray Kingbird TBH.  Looks like the white outer edges of the tail in a NOMO, and as Charlie said, white in the wings being very visible when they fly, should be perhaps the easiest way to differentiate the two species from one another.  Hope this helps!
