Eastern Wood-Pewee. Right?

Recommended Posts

My yard, Sept. 6.

I initially reported this as an Eastern Wood-Pewee, but now I'm starting to have my doubts, especially with how empid-y the face is looking. It's just so dark! Have I been fooling myself and is this actually a messy Traill's? Thanks in advance.

This can't be a pewee with that bright white eyering and short primary projection.  Appears to be a juvenile whatever it is.  Do you have more photos?

Yeah, but the angle doesn't really change. I suppose you want a better look at the primary projection? Or the tail?

Agreed, this is an Empidonax. Not sure if we can ascertain whether it's Least or Traill's from this angle though.

Nothing about it really felt like a Least. In the field especially, I could tell the size and proportions were off for one. Also it's too dark the bill is too long and substantial IMO.

I was discounting Pewee initially because of wing length however juveniles have shorter wings than adults.

Nonetheless I still think the wings are too short and as TBN said the eye ring seems a little too distinct, difficult to be sure of leg length from the photo, so Traill's for me.
