IKLland
I’m 50/50 on this one. Today, Orange County, Ca. Thanks! Coloration seems better for BHGR, but the streaking is really extensive IMO.

Quiscalus quiscula
It looks enough like Black-headed Grosbeak for me to gasp if I saw it in my yard.

Okay, besides the amount of streaking, what are the other field marks?
Quiscalus quiscula
Just now, IKLland said: Okay, besides the amount of streaking, what are the other field marks? Honestly, I'm not good at tricky immature grosbeak IDs. But, something about the bill and impression just didn't make me think of RBGR. Also, see these images that also have extensive streaking and were labeled as Black-headed- https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/486243571#_ga=2.88882203.1059487371.1663935882-1804096732.1663935882 https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/486451661#_ga=2.155734971.1059487371.1663935882-1804096732.1663935882
jayD
the streaking leads me to believe RBGB. BHGB have little or none. 1
Bird-Boys
Black-headed. The streaking looks within range for BHGR to me, and the bill has a dark upper mandible. 3
jayD
i see your point, also the upper protrudes beyond the lower. BHGB 2
kjsmith
Note the dark ear patch bordered above AND below, tapering back to a point at the back of its head. Darker upper bill, streaked back. This can only be a Black-headed Grosbeak. 2
