Charlie Spencer
How's everyone doing in FL and coastal GA and SC? Those of you in less affected areas, are you getting any windblown birding windfalls?
Birds are cool
Me, my father, and a couple birding friends are going birding on Friday to look for sandpipers and some other birds this Friday. I am really hoping the hurricane blows some crazy birds in.

No problems at all, as Hurricane Ian affected the west coast much worse. We've gotten tons of rain the last 2 days and it was very windy. That's all. I was lucky though, as last night a tornado badly trashed a community 11 miles from me. The only "harm" I incurred was having to cancel tonight's Chinese restaurant dinner plans, due to a local tornado watch. Last year around this time without the hurricane, some other Laurens county birders reported White Rumped Sandpipers, both species of dowitchers, both species of teal, an avocet, and some others. There are also some hit or miss birds. The hotspot is on private land, so we had to get permission which is the only reason me and my father have not gone sooner. Wish me luck!
lonestranger
Hoping everyone in Ian's path is staying safe and keeping as dry as possible. ? How's the weather in your area, @Charlie Spencer? Are you in flood danger from the hurricane now?

Supposedly 2-4 inches of rain but we haven't had 1/4" so far. Yesterday I took all the hanging feeders down, turned the patio table over, etc. Ain't nothing but a thing. I'm waiting to hear how @Birds are cool did today!

The people me and my father were supposed to bird with got sick, so we are hoping they feel better on Saturday or Sunday. I did go birding at our local WMA though, and saw a rare Louisiana Waterthrush.
lonestranger
So, did anyone experience any fallout birds from the storm? https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.wfla.com/weather/hurricane/do-birds-know-when-a-hurricane-is-coming/amp/

Charlie Spencer
I can't say they were brought by the northwesterly winds on the back side of the storm, but I had three birds in the yard this weekend that haven't visited me before. They may have been storm-brought, or just coincidence. Yellow-billed Cuckoo and Gray Catbird were firsts for my yard. The cuckoo hung around for about a minute, the catbird barely long enough for me to confirm the cap and undertail. I've had mature Rose-breasted Grosbeaks in the spring but this was my first fall migrant in the yard (immature male). He visited the feeders a couple of times over a spread of several hours. SirVive
Maybe I can blame Ian for two new yard birds too??
