fstopbirds
Seen in Prospect Park, NY on September 30, popping along on the ground. Think it might be a fledgling Fox Sparrow but not sure. Thanks for any help!
IKLland
Scruffy(molting?) House Finch. The bill is completely wrong for a sparrow.

Hasan
It's a Purple Finch. Notice the straight, not curved, culmen, and the greenish coloration on the coverts and wings.
Hasan
Eh, looking at it again I'm not sure... Bill still says purple to me but not sure
IKLland
Could the bill be wonky due to the overall scruffy and messy plumage? I’m having a hard time calling this a PUFI.
lonestranger
I'm not going to suggest an ID but I will suggest that the bird's head might be tilted enough that the curvature of the upper mandible might not be noticeable. What looks like the top of the beak might be influenced by the angle of the side of the beak. Any other photos @fstopbirds?
Quiscalus quiscula
I wouldn't have a problem calling this a Purple Finch.

Scattered and smothered way of saying you had a hard time committing to that one. More waffling than brunch at a Belgian pastry shop. jayD
is there a chance this bird could be leucitic?
Quiscalus quiscula
19 minutes ago, jayD said: is there a chance this bird could be leucitic? No, the markings would look more irregular. This is a scruffy Purple Finch, and it looks this way due to molt/wear.
