AlexHenry
Not my bird. A friend sent me this photo. Only photo I’ve seen so far. Is this just a Lapland or Chestnut-collared? It looks weird to me but I don’t know. Edited October 10, 2022 by AlexHenry

AlexHenry
It’s a Smiths I didn’t even want to suggest it but that’s a weird looking longspur
Quiscalus quiscula
Stupid question, but how was Savannah Sparrow eliminated? From somebody who hasn't seen a longspur before.

Well, assuming it's a longspur, it does look pretty good for Smith's, but the streaking might be too broad? Just my very nonexpert opinion. AlexHenry
I’m pretty sure it’s a Smiths. That was my first reaction seeing the photo but I’ve never seen one before and it’s super rare so I didn’t want to suggest it

DLecy
Smith's!!! This is a fantastic bird. Can delve into the ID deeper if needed, but the most salient point is that it represents a 12th state record.

The differences are more genetic than physical so I’ll start carrying a DNA kit to the field. Might help with scaup too! 1

Yup, my outdated field guide still lists them as part of "Emberizidae", which New World Sparrows are no longer part of either.
