This thread motivated me to finally do some digging on sparrows vs. longspurs.  They’ve been lumped and split before.  The differences are more genetic than physical so I’ll start carrying a DNA kit to the field.  Might help with scaup too!

Yup, my outdated field guide still lists them as part of "Emberizidae", which New World Sparrows are no longer part of either.
