Unknown shorebird next to a Willet on Hilton Head Island, SC 10/21/2022

Recommended Posts

Well, that's what I originally thought but what the heck is it then? I've heard from ornithologists on iNat that it's a Dunlin in an alert posture. I'm a mycologist/plant pathologist so what do I know? Well, I know a bit, but I'm not sure about this one. Actually joined here today to get some opinions.

You know, I've identified 100's if not 1000's of Dunlins over the years as an International Shorebird Survey leader, but this one just didn't say "Dunlin" to me - perhaps I should apologize for posting such a common bird as an unknown, but I just couldn't see it as that. Especially by itself; I usually see them in clusters or large groups.
