Hairy or Downy Woodpecker

Recommended Posts

I dont' think I'll ever be able to tell the difference.  Most in my area are Downy.  Like I am pretty sure this is

I know a Hairy Woodpecker is supposed to have a longer bill.  This one look longer but it probably just the angle or something.

Is is a Downy also?  Richmond, VA on Dec 2, 2018  Sometime, I'd like to get a picture of a Hairy identified to add to my bird species count.

Thanks,

Scott H.

Yes, both Downies.  Most Downies have the black spots on the white tail feathers and Hairies do not, at least here in the east.  Hairies are larger, about the size of a Red-bellied Woodpecker.  You would probably notice the difference in size at this distance.

Both are Downy’s. Second one looks as though it towel dried its hair after a bath 😄 haha. Great pictures by the way!
