cooper's or sharp-shinned?

Recommended Posts

Picture from West Chester, PA, taken yesterday.  Only two crappy shots as it did not hang around.

  • The head looks kind of big and blocky like a Cooper's.  (But that may be because its feathers are ruffled.)
  • I don't see a Cooper's cap.  (But that may just be a result of the poor lighting.)
  • The whole "square vs. rounded tail" thing throws me off.  Looking at pictures of both species in Macaulay Library, I can't tell the difference.
  • Seems like a good amount of white on tip of the tail, which favors Cooper's.

I am leaning towards Cooper's but could use some help.  Thanks in advance!

I would vote Cooper's based on that big, blocky head and not-too-dainty legs and toes, but am curious what others think.
