cgasue 1 Posted December 9, 2018 Hi there, Can anyone please help me identify this hawk? I always have a hard time with hawks. Thanks.
The Bird Nuts 1,816 Posted December 9, 2018 Welcome! That is a young Red-tailed Hawk. The band of streaks across the belly and the dark patches at the front edge of the underside of the wings (patagials marks) are good ID marks. It is a juvenile because of the pale eyes and brown barred tail. Remember to include location next time!
cgasue 1 Posted December 9, 2018 Thank you so much. It was taken in London, Ontario yesterday afternoon. I will post location the next time.

In this case, I didn't really need the location because Red-taileds occur pretty much all over North America, but in some cases location as well as the date are helpful for narrowing down the possibilities.
