Birds are cool
My CBC director replied! He said that he usually does not let new people into the team, but that I may be able to tag along with one of the team leaders that leads the count in Beaverdam WMA, which is only half a mile from my house!

I'd look to join a different chapter. Any organization that charges money just for being in their company, especially in a public setting when you could be there on your own, isn't worth being in their company. Another option might be to show up at the field trip locations and just not pay to be part of the group. Just be a friendly birder out for a hike and engage with the other friendly birders that just so happen to be there at the same time as you. 😉

Is this a common thing for other people? In both places I have lived (VT, TN) there is an open invitation to all who want to contribute. I haven’t done a TN one yet, but in VT there are multiple ways to contribute, either as a feild team member, solo hiker, or feeder watcher. I’m not sure what’s going on with the director for that CBC circle, but I would think they would want all the people involved that they can. Sorry, but that’s just weird to me that they don’t “usually” let people into the team. Maybe there’s a good reason, like some COVID restrictions in place or a park rule or something, but it’s hard to believe that a birder wouldn’t want more birders to join a birding team. Yeah, every CBC I've taken part in here in California (4 or 5 now) are always actively recruiting and trying to get as many people to join. There's never any harm in having more people.
Charlie Spencer
Ditto, other than a few I know of in restricted access sites.

chipperatl
The third CBC I thought I might do, won’t be happening for me. It is being done in middle of the week.
chipperatl
I think this morning was my best CBC yet. My trip report I keep counting 33 species, but it says 32 and my tabulation sheet shows 32...not sure what's going on there. Only thing flagged was high count, twice, for 2 Red-shouldered Hawks. Had 5 on my trip report. Not 100 sure I can say all 5 were individual birds as they were within a couple miles of each sighting. Great recordings of the first pair calling as they were harassed by crows. Not so sure there wasn't a third one tucked back in there.
Aaron
Joined my first count today at the last second as I realized I’d be at a house that was within the circle. Only a feeder watcher so pretty boring stuff, almost 400 Bohemian waxwings though and somehow I only got 2 HOSPs in an hour and a half 🤷🏻♂️. Feel bad for the field people today as it is very cold out!

Here I can only dream of seeing one out of range.

They’re usually one of most numerous birds reported for CBCs here. Last year they counted almost 16,000

Tanager 101
https://ebird.org/checklist/S124150546 Did a CBC Saturday. Here are the results from our territory. Winter Wren and Field Sparrow are the only two rarities. (Other species like Snow Bunting and Merlin were great finds for the area we were in) Hoping to go on another one I was invited to Wednesday.
Charlie Spencer
Well, I started this discussion and then Life Happened. Too complicated to explain it all, but I missed the group I was going with on Saturday, and I'll miss the other at the end of the month. Ah, well; there's always next year.

No, this is one sun-up to sun-down CBC in a certain territory in Midland county. It was organized and we covered territory #1. So yeah this isn't two seperate ones or every the whole county. I went with a really experienced birder though. Is this actually a really bird checklist? It didn't seem that big to me

It didn't seem that big to me Ebird wants you to do a new checklist for each new location that you visit. This avoids long distance and long time-wise checklists. Those kinds of lists make not so useful scientific data for ebird.
Aidan B
Did my first CBC of the season on Sunday, Nothing too rare, but we had some highlights. Varied Thrush, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Fantastic Owl numbers, the first Sora ever for area 7, Phainopepla, Merlin, and Four White-throated Sparrows (Average count of WTSP for the entire count circle is 2-3)! https://ebird.org/tripreport/92358 Edited December 20, 2022 by Aidan B
Connor Cochrane
Only CBC I'll be doing this year. A new route for me so missed a few birds I should've gotten. The five Red Knot were nice though. https://ebird.org/tripreport/90550/125746
IKLland
I’m doing my only CBC on Monday…it’s going to be my first ever CBC so I’m really excited and curious. I’m going with three others(one is one of the top birders in the county), but it’s not that good of an area bird-wise.

Pretty much the same here, except that the guy leading the trip is a top birder for the state, and we are meeting on Tuesday.
