I see this done occasionally, but I have always understood that one shouldn't report zero for a species in a checklist. Does anyone know why people utilize this practice? Wouldn't simply not reporting the bird serve the same function?

If one really wants to point out that they didn’t see it, they can write in the checklist comments(as I often do), “Unsuccessful search for …”

I have done this a couple times at rare bird stakeouts to indicate that yes, I was looking for that bird in particular, but it did not show. Just so anyone else who might be interested in looking for the bird knows that I made an effort to look for it, rather than just visiting the place without looking for that bird.

Should that species go on an eBird checklist based on the shadow? Based on the shadow alone, can you definitively identify the species?

Quiscalus quiscula
I remember seeing a crow while taking off from an airport in Japan, and two airports close by to me have hotspot status with Snowy Owls, Snow Buntings, Horned Larks, and even Baird's and Pectoral Sandpipers (which are hard birds here) being reported on the fields.

While I have indeed seen birds in an airport (as well as in other places like supermarkets), that was pre-eBird days for me.
Connor Cochrane
Last time I was at the Denver airport there was a Says Phoebe above the security checkpoint. I find most airports have small populations of house sparrows and pigeons inside as well.
