sbruenjes
I saw this bird today at Verona Park in Essex County, NJ. I know its a dark eyed junco, but does the brownish color pattern mean female?
Snake Fingers
Possibly Female Slate-Colored, but maybe Pink-Sided. Do you have any other pictures?

DLecy
Slate-colored female, perhaps immature. Not a Pink-sided. 6

I don’t think immature, but probably Slate-colored female. However we have to keep in mind hybridization and the fact that this is such a varied species. There is a possibility that it's a young male that's not into it's darker adult plumage yet. 1
Snake Fingers
I think the photo might just have to be left at Dark-Eyed Junco.
Quiscalus quiscula
I think we can safely call it Slate-colored, given the extreme rarity of the subspecies in eastern US, with zero NJ records. 7

When two subspecies of a species interbreed they produce an intergrade, not a hybrid. Additionally, mearnsi are not known to interbreed with Hyemalis Group birds. 5

I would think that there is too much brown in the wing panel and mantle for this bird to be a HY male. 3
Charlie Spencer
Huh. I didn't know you could determine the sex of mature Slate-coloreds in the field.
Birds are cool
After taking a closer look, and comparing the bird with some photos, I agree with Male Slate-colored. Sorry for misleading you.

Just as importantly, there's not enough color on the sides, or if you look at it another way, there's too much white.
