2023 Year Lists

One of my biggest nemesisses this year. They have migrated out already, and they are near impossible to get during the fall.

They breed here, so I often hear and sometimes see them singing in the right habitat. You might get them when you come to NY, but I think they are more common in migration.

I'm just worried about them on my GA state list. It would be nice to get them in NY though.

Just hit 250!! My second ever Black-billed Cuckoo in my home County got me there. I’m 17 species behind last year’s pace, solely because of the trip to the Gulf Coast I took last March. Im doing better than I thought! Also, next week I’m going to be volunteering to do a YELLOW RAIL survey in northeastern VT! Nobody has done one before, and if they are anywhere in the state, that’s where they’ll be. I’m super excited, gonna lose a night of sleep but I’m used to that. Hopefully I’ll be back here with some audio to post! 🤞

With six today I'm up to 100 on the year. If I was less conservative about my lists I'd have another two, one I'm pretty sure of but that was too sketchy an observation to count, and what would have been lifer pelicans that were just fuzzy blobs on the ocean that could have in theory been gulls (but were likely the pelicans that people have been reporting in exactly the same spot).

Autocorrect; we're not in fact pelicans

Went out for first time without my dog this year.  Was weird, but a little easier to bird.  Still a very strange year for the area. The last two years my total alone was higher than the whole county total at this point.  That is with a few more active birders even.  Things have just been really slow.  Up to 141 with 7 FOY yesterday, including some really good looks at Prothonotary Warbler.  Unfortunately another birder had a Louisiana Waterthrush in the same park, while I was there on the other side.  I was never able to relocate what would be county bird #250 for me.  Was nice to see some birds finally show up yesterday though.

Not a bad day.  Took a 1/2 day vacation, for first time off this migration season.  The White-eyed Vireo last night was a nice find, as they are so rare and random around here.  Had 8 FOY today, and 2 that were FOY for the whole county.  I think those 2 actually pushed the county even with my pace from last year.  Right now I'm about middle of the pack for where I usually am.  Still lagging behind on the birds moving through the county.  Still very weird year.  Still a lot of birds I should have at this point, and may be tough to get in the fall.  At 177 for the year.

Three more year birds today: Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Common Gallinule, and a surprise Mourning Warbler. The lattermost is the first one I've come across in a few years. I didn't see or hear the hoped-for Summer Tanager or Alder Flycatcher though.

For this year:

292 world(which is only SoCal and Florida)

257 for California

234 for Orange County

I’m WELL ahead of last year’s paces for all three. My most recent addition to all three is a Bald Eagle yesterday.

Took my dog for a walk on Saturday and managed FOY Cliff Swallow, and a surprise Common Gallinule.  Then ran out later that evening as Semipalmated Sandpiper showed up.  That put me at 180 for the year.  The only time I’ve hit 200 for the year, and not been at 180 by end of May I ended up getting 180 on 2nd of June.  Nabbed Canada Warbler and Blue-headed Vireo (finally) this morning, and had a rather surprising Common Nighthawk fly overhead through the woods at 0918.

Kentucky Warbler, my first in 8 years I think, and Summer Tanager. I'm up to 186 species for the year, and am still ahead of last year -- I was at 181 species at the end of May last year and didn't hit 186 species until early August.

187 species with a Willow Flycatcher. Too bad the weather for the rest of today and tomorrow has rain in the forecast. I wonder it will be stormy enough to force down migrating shorebirds, like the Whimbrels on the far side of my inland county just about a year ago

Hit 306 species this morning with a Williamson's Sapsucker. Sitting 15 species ahead of my best year at this time. Not a bad year list at all, especially since I haven't left California.
