2023 Year Lists

Recommended Posts

Limpkin in my county, found this morning (not my checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S147633422.) I saw it as close as about 25 feet this afternoon, out in the open, in the canal, foraging for clams. There are five accepted records for Maryland, none for my county.

Yesterday I saw an Olive-sided Flycatcher close to home. These two sightings bring me up to 203 species for the year.

Been a month since I updated here, and I’ve added 10 species, up to 279! The last three were White-winged Dove, a self found White Ibis, and the Cave Swallow that I’ve been chasing for a couple months.

Surprisingly, I’m only 9 species behind last year’s pace, which is much better than I thought I would be doing!

However, my state year list is doing incredible! I’m way ahead of last year’s pace, and only 3 species away from beating last year’s record, which I should be able to get  this fall!

There is an Upland Sandpiper in my county, so my wife and I went to look for it this afternoon. We saw it, and ran into some birding friends that we hadn't seen for some time. Neither one of us have seen that species recently, so it was nice to see it through the heat shimmer in between the 3 dozen Killdeers.

Stilt Sandpiper was reported at the one single small fluddle in our county.  Had debated whether to go out or not, but that report clinched it.  Found 2 of them out there.  Gets me to 194, which is 3rd best rate at this point.  I really must have cranked out the birds in 2021 to go from 193 to 212.  No way I'm getting to 212 this year.   But closer to just getting to 200.

Cape May Warbler on the 25th, and then 4 Common Terns (horrible looks) got me up to 196 on the year.  Thought I might have a shot to best my August high of 102, but at 99 and working tomorrow I don't have high hopes.

Well, it's September but this weekend I passed last year's total.  However, this year's number includes a 30-species trip to the UK back in May.  For the US alone, I'm still 27 behind last year.  I have a big weekend coming up at the end of the month, so hopefully I can improve the 'real' year-over-year number.

I have 113 in Metro Vancouver for the year (in the top 100 list at 184th), and 132 for the "world" in a 4ish hour radius from my home. Both numbers are highs for me. I'll be out east for some family visits next month which should have these numbers jump a bit, even though I won't be doing much actual birding while there.

I'm at 382 for California this year, which is higher than I've ever gotten in a year (previous best was 373). I'm really trying to get to 400 by the end of the year, but I'm not sure I'll make it. Still have several months left though.

I think you could probably make that happen especially with a trip down here

I'm sitting at 332 for the year and still missing a few easy targets. If I don't take any more significant trips this year, I'll probably end up around 340. That's without really going into California or southeast Arizona, either.

My world year list is at 205 which is the highest it's ever been at this point in time and 2 species more than my world total of 203 in 2021. Considering the first checklist I made this year was in April I consider this very good. I predict I'll be able to get up to 250 once I add the winter gulls, ducks, and other winter species, along with the uncommon shorebirds.

My California list is at 158 which is 3 and 4 species behind 2021 and 2020 at this point in time respectivly, I'm hoping I'll be able to get to 200 by the end of the year.

Amazing what a change in venue does for the lists. In wandering around with the family today back east I've seen 18 species, 6 of which are first of year, including three lifers. Up to 141 on the year, my best yearly total to date.
