Peromyscus
A Merlin on a birdwalk this morning is #76. I missed the *seven* Sandhill Cranes (a high number for Maryland afaik) on Monday. The cranes have not been seen since Sunday, sadly.

I missed 1000 cranes on Saturday that were five minutes away from the hotspot that I went to, and then they were reported the next day.
Birds are cool
Year bird 107 this morning! Male Purple Finch! I didn't have my camera or a pair of binoculars with me, but I recorded him, and got some decent views. He is on this checklist. https://ebird.org/checklist/S126475205
Avery
It wasn’t pretty, but got to 117 today with Whooping Cranes! https://ebird.org/checklist/S126620730

They were a mile and a half (at least) away with HEAVY heat distortion. Barely was able to solidify the ID when they flew. So no photos 😂 here’s a Sandhill though! 5
Peromyscus
I'm up to 81 species with Wild Turkey, Common Loon, Red-headed Woodpecker, Winter Wren. The last 3 years that I saw over 200 species I didn't reach 81 until late February or March. Of course, I am usually nowhere this active in January.
Aidan B
I'm now up to 164 species for the year after spending the day chasing rarities around in Santa Cruz and San Mateo Counties. Still a lot of easy birds I am missing!
Aaron
Got to 29 today by birding in the foothills. Was actually a pretty good checklist. Got a chickadee hat trick which finally allowed me to defeat County nemesis mountain chickadee, and also saw my second ever Northern Pygmy-owl which was a surprise. Hoping to add a few more species in the next couple days before the polar vortex comes and ruins the fun!

Connor Cochrane
I'm at 194 for Marin County now, picked up Greater White-fronted Goose, Heermann's Gull, Spotted Owl, Redhead and a rare (county bird) Summer Tanager in the past few days. I've got most of the easy wintering birds for the year in the country so far, but am missing a few higher elevation species, most notably Red-breasted Nuthatch, at the moment. I don't think I'll get to 200 before the end of the month, as I'm going to be pretty bust this week, and the remaining easy birds are pretty far separated from each other.

Dang, that's a lot of birds. Is this a high for January, or have you hit 200 before?
neilpa
A backyard Hermit Thrush put me at 80 for the year and 78 for my county, 6 ahead of my county pace last year.
IKLland
I’m up to 181 for the year(180 ABA countable), 135 for California, and 130 for my county. I haven’t been able to get out much at all lately except for the pelagic last weekend, and I may not get out for a real outing again this month other than tomorrow, so I doubt I’ll reach 150 for the county before February 1.
Aaron
35 today and I think that’ll be it for January. Still a lot of easy birds around, but with the weather taking a nose dive tomorrow, I doubt I’ll be going anywhere until February. Mostly missing ducks, but they’re all on the opposite side of the city where the river isn’t frozen over. So I’ll probably make a trip over there once the weather warms back up.
