gpoole
On the Salt Marsh Trail in Halifax, Nova Scotia this morning. Could be a female Red-winged Blackbird but I thought I should ask you folks to have a look. Also I saw a very brown Dark-eyed Junco that stood out from the others. Quiscalus quiscula
First one is a Seaside Sparrow! Junco should be a female, no idea on ssp though. 1

Aidan B
1. Looks like a Seaside Sparrow to me! Get that bird reported right away! 2. Not sure in the Junco, but maybe a Oregon or Cismontanus type. 3
blackburnian
The sparrow appears to be ~3rd record for NS in January. Excellent find. Make sure to put it on eBird! 3
Colton V
Is the junco not a normal female Slate-colored? It’s definitely not Oregon. 2
chipperatl
I can't see enough of the junco to see if that is a real hood on it.

gpoole
Thanks for your help. As Colton V pointed out, the Junco is most likely a female Slate-colored. It's just that I see many Juncos all year long and this one being so brown just stood out.

Yes, male and female juncos normally winter in different places, with the males wintering further north than the females, so we're more used to gray-colored male juncos than the brown-colored females that occasionally appear in the midst of a flock. 3

I got 3 males and 2 females today while birding!

I think further south where you are it's more normal to see females, further north like NY and Canada, I haven't seen a female in winter for a long time...

I know, but its still cool to see them. I only have seen them ten times, nine of them being in the past month. We rarely get Juncos here.

Dark-Eyed Juncos are one of my favorite birds.
