Hi, saw this bird yesterday in Vancouver BC and I don't know what to make of it. It was visibly smaller in stature than the GWGU and hybrids around it. But it has a heavy bill and is just smudgy rather than having any distinct patterning. Is this just a small glaucous-winged thing? First photo was taken half an hour before the rest so it may be a different bird, but I think it's the same (2nd from left). Thanks!

It's a first winter.

And the bird in question is a 2nd winter… otherwise known as a 2nd cycle unless I’m wrong in my terminology there

I’m 99% sure you are correct.

I agree, definitely not Thayer’s and has some GWGU genes in it. I will point out that I have seen many gulls(particularly Western Gulls) that appeared much smaller in size compared to others of the same species. I’m not sure why this is, if anyone knows, please let us know.

Size in gulls is variable depending on sex and is also subject to individual variation.
