Torsion1
Hi everyone, and belated happy new year -- I saw this little one at City of Rocks State Park between Deming and Silver City, New Mexico (southwestern part of the state) last weekend. Merlin says it's likely a Brewer's sparrow, but, as always with sparrows other than the house variety, I'd like some third-party confirmation. Thanks very much! Aidan B
I believe this bird is a Chipping Sparrow, not a Brewer's. Note the dark lores and the hint of a chestnut crown patch.
Torsion1
I could absolutely buy that -- we saw lots of chipping sparrows that day as well. Thanks very much for the ID details!

It's good at showing options, but sometimes can also confuse a begginer.
Charlie Spencer
Merlin is good at offering possibilities best regarded as a starting points for additional research.
