Aythya confirmations

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'd like to make sure I have these birds correct please. Today in Vancouver BC.

1. Ring-necked

2. Please confirm that this is a redhead in all photos - the same bird, only one present, just making sure the last photo isn't a Ring-necked in disguise

3. Please confirm that these are both Lesser Scaup - I didn't see anything I'd call a greater but these looked a little different than the rest of the pack. Last one I want to make sure isn't a Ring-necked.

Thank you!

Why is the female in three a Lesser?

If your talking about the last photo, I was thinking because of the eye position and the peaked head, but I wouldn’t call it, looking at it again.

2 and 4 look like lesser or greater scaups. look at the white behind the bill

Female Redheads are pretty variable. They can have lots of white on the face or very little. This bird has a stronger white patch at the base of the bill, but it's within the spectrum.

Here's some examples on eBird:

Showing variability: https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/522330361

A similar bird:https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/522265951

Anyhow, compare the head color to the female scaup in #2 and #4

Ok yeah didn't know that that's probably a redhead. I'm just kind of new to identifying birds.
