Colton V
January 21, Oregon Coast. 1. Rock Sandpiper? At Devil’s Punchbowl, Otter Rock. 2. Short-billed Gull? Are the primaries supposed to be this pale? In Yaquina Bay, Newport.
Aidan B
1. Yep! Not 100% certain on all the birds, but at least two are definitely Rock Sandpipers. 2. Yes, Short-billed. I've certainly never seen one with such pale primaries. I'd bet the bird is leucistic. Edited January 22 by Aidan B
Connor Cochrane
Yeah, Rock Sandpiper and Short-billed Gull. About primary color, they doesn't seem typical but Kamtchaka is usually darker so that should be ruled out. Pretty sure the one on the top right is Rockpiper as well and the rest are Black Turnstones. Thanks for the confirmation.

I think 5 turnstones—there’s one between the two rockpipers and one in the top left which are easy to miss
DLecy
I think there are at least 4, maybe 5 Rock Sandos in this pic.
DLecy
Only seems like 2-3 turnstones, but I’m on my phone.

DLecy
Here is the mark up. Blue = ROSP, Red = BLTU. These are best guesses due to the contrasting and dark centered shafts to the scaps, and overall grayness of the birds which is differentiated from Black Turnstones which are more brown/black and don't have as contrasting centers to the scaps with much more white on the fringes. I would call the blue birds 1-4 Rock Sandpipers and bird 5 might actually be a Surfbird. The red birds may be Black Turnstones and there is another bird behind blue bird 4 that seems like a possible BLTU. What is everyone else seeing here? DLecy
Sorry, I meant Rock Sandpiper = ROSA.

Connor Cochrane
1 hour ago, Birds are cool said: Why is n.2 a Rock Sandpiper? Facial pattern, look at that little white around the beady black eye, gives a pretty typical ROSA look. I missed bird #1 when looking last at them last time, but I still think 1-4 are the only ROSA. 5 doesn't feel right.
