Jim W
I'm not finding much information to differentiate immature grouse. These three were seen at Emerald Lake in Yoho NP, BC on 8-25. They were just off of the lakeside trail and did not seem very nervous about my passing within 5 feet of them. In fact, in the third picture, they wandered out onto the edge of the trail about 10 feet behind me. This trail has heavy traffic, so I suppose they are simply acclimated to people. Based on location, they could be Spruce Grouse, Dusky Grouse or Ruffed Grouse. They seem most similar to pictures of Spruce Grouse on Macaulay Library, but that is pretty subjective. Does anyone have any thoughts on what they are? Thanks in advance!

egosnell2002
Yep, Spruce. These birds look like juveniles, which are usually pretty docile. The adults even are known to be extremely approachable, and have been nicknamed "fool's hen".
