MWM
Just not sure about this one. (Photo taken during a snowstorm, not best quality).
Birds are cool
This is a Red-shouldered Hawk
Avery
@Birds are coolThere are maybe 2 confirmed reports of RSHA from that area so far this year. We would need to see some field marks to be sure. This looks fine for a Red-tailed to me, but I’d like to see any other photos that@MWMhas to be sure.

I am looking at the bird on the computer and it still looks like a RSHA to me, but I could be wrong. Can you explain to me why this looks like a RTHA to you? IKLland
The GISS is screaming RSHA to me.
Quiscalus quiscula
Doesn't strike me as a Red-shouldered.
MWM
Red-shouldered aren't exceptionally rare around here, usually see them in migration, which seems to be starting here. Just picked up N. Shoveler & Sandhill Crane (first of the year) a mile or 2 from this raptor. Couldn't get any better shots - snowing too hard, but here is the best I got. MWM
Maybe it's another Roughie - this one was in the same area 1/2 hour earlier. 🙂
Avery
@Birds are cool @IKLland I feel like with the detail we can see, from this angle we would certainly see some barring in the secondaries. Also, the tail seems too short to me. What are you seeing that points to RSHA?

However, the facial pattern looks more like a RSHA to me, but I can’t explain that part too well.
Charlie Spencer
I thought that indistinct white 'V' on the back was a good mark for Red-tailed? If it isn't, I get to spend the rainy morning reviewing some of my buteo photos...
