smittyone@cox.net
Seen late December last year in Western Iowa. It was hunting while facing me, so I only have head on and side shots. Even when it saw me and flew away, I didn't get a single upper body/upper tail pic. What subspecies of adult Red-tailed Hawk is this? I'm leaning toward Eastern.
Jerry Friedman
Seeing the mottling and only partial rufous color on the tail and the messy barring on the flight feathers of the left wing (visible in the third picture), I'm thinking it's Harlan's. Great shots as usual! Edited March 5 by Jerry Friedman
smittyone@cox.net
Thanks Jerry. I saw those same features, so I can't explain why I thought Eastern.
