Bama
East Central Alabama on March 15, 2023 Haven't seen many Purple Finches here in a couple of years. So now we have a few birds mixed in with the House Finches and they are a richer, darker color and no streaking on the breast. I have not yet seen any female Purple Finches, so maybe I'm wishful thinking?
Kevin
It's a House Finch. 1

Birding Boy
54 minutes ago, Kevin said: It's a House Finch. Even with no flank streaking at all? That’s the most intense and extensive raspberry red I’ve ever seen on a House Finch. Not saying it isn’t one, but just wondering if this was a known variation or something.
DLecy
Strikes me more as a Purple Finch. Any other pics?
Kevin
Looking at it again I don't have a problem with Purple Finch.
Avery
Is it missing feathers at the lores? That could be giving the impression of brown patterning on the face. Purple Finch for me as well
chipperatl
Any pics in profile so we can get a look at the beak shape? I lean Purple Finch, but that beak looks curved, albeit a tough angle to know for sure. I've seen some very colorful HOFI before, close to this.
Avery
I literally only just now noticed the other bird on the feeder. I think it’s a Chipping Sparrow? 😆
IKLland
I’m fine with this being a Purple, but I have also seen some very colorful House Finches, so I’d like to see other photos to be sure.
RobinHood
My first reaction was Purple with the amount of red and absence of streaking on the flanks but the bill looked wrong. is it possible the bill is deformed? It doesn't seem to close completely.
Charlie Spencer
Raspberry all the way down to the legs, with minimal faint streaking. Purple.
IKLland
It’s just something about that facial pattern that really bothers me for a purple.
lonestranger
Like many others, I'm torn on this bird. I want to call it a purple but the beak makes me unsure. Do you have any other photos @Bama? A side view of the beak could help sway opinion from one side to the other for the indecisive ones amongst us.
Birds are cool
Purple Finch for me as well.
PaulK
There appears to be colour into the wingbars, and along with everything else this has to be a Purple.
