Yeah, I was really surprised when I saw it. I grabbed my camera and ran out and was able to snap a couple of shots before it flew on. I've never looked at records, etc., so I had no idea it would be a county record. Thanks for pointing that out.

I really don't even know how to go about doing that. I signed up on ebird years ago, mostly just to get reports of rare birds in my area. I did start a list on there of birds I have seen, but that's been years ago and I never followed through with my list.

All you have to do is go to the ebird website, click the "submit" button on the top left of the screen( if your on a computer) and make a location(call it whatever makes sense for where you saw it, you can even use the street name) and select the date of the observation, then on the next page click "historical" for the ebird checklist option, then on the next page add the one pileated woodpecker(since its rare, you may need to click "add species" to get it to show up, then click incomplete(because you only entered one bird that you saw that day). Then, once the checklist is saved, you can click on "add media" and upload the photo of the bird. 

If you don't want to have to do it yourself, if you give me your account info, I can enter it for you. (I promise I won't do anything with your personal information).

If you know the exact date and location, pick Incidental instead of Historic.  Historic is for when you don't know the exact date or location.  If you know those two items, then Historical doesn't apply, regardless of how old the sighting is.

Do you have the exact day or the month it was seen? I'd like to write up a quick email for the CVBirds listserve since Pileated Woodpeckers are so rare in the Central Valley. Looking at ebird, I see no reliable records for the entire Central Valley, with very few records from the low foothills right near the valley edge. Historical records are always good to document!

I just realized that historical is for when you know the date, but not the start time, duration, distance, etc.

Yes, it was taken on Oct 27, 2012. The photo is on Flickr for public view. It show all the stats for the photo. I added the street where it was taken to the photo. Feel free to use it if you want to report it.

Thanks! The late part of October/early November would be the most likely time for a Pileated Woodpecker to show up in the valley, so that matches perfectly with when I would suspect a Pileated to show up here in sacramento.

I Haven't seen a ton of Pileated Woodpeckers. However, I've had great looks at the species multiple times! This young juvenile might be my best photo of the species.
