There was one few years ago at Stone Harbor, NJ near Cape May that hung around for a couple weeks. Wasn’t very satisfying look though. Got to see it’s rear end as it flew away. I bet we all have those stories to tell. One of mine would be of a Vaux Swift. Saw one once previously id confirmed and spent the whole winter in Gainesville, FL at the exact same location. So no question of the id. But I only saw it for a split second. It flew into sight and then straight into a chimney. Moving so fast that I really only saw it just before it went into the chimney. Didn't see it approach at all. I decided not to count it hoping it would return the next winter and it did and brought friends. There were at least 11 of them. This time they made several passes before diving into the chimney. So I got multiple looks and even a bad photo or two. Dang they are fast. I really debated counting that first one or not. Like when I saw Northern Lapwing I pulled up in my car & jumped out just in time to see them flying off never to return. Had just enough time to snap one terrible picture. To my knowledge I was the last person in NJ to see them. Shouldn't really complain though since that same day I also saw a Pink-footed Goose, 2 Barnacle Geese & a Greater White-fronted Goose. Worst one though was the time a friend of mine texted me that there was a Red-necked Phalarope in a pond at a park 10 minutes from my house. At the time it would have been a lifer so I rushed to the park to see it. Saw my friend when I got there & asked if it was still there. Turns out it had been swallowed by a Bullfrog 😯.
