You will probably have better success of you learn their calls.
Bird Brain
Maybe not my best ever of a Northern Flicker, but the best one I could find easily. Also my most recent.

They’re quite loud. I often won’t even actively look for birds, depending on what I’m trying to find, and will only use audio clues to know what’s around and where the bird might be.

Look on the ground. And they seem to love cemetery lawns. Edited March 1, 2021 by floraphile additional info
Aaron
The drumming season has started (at least up here) so plenty of noise going around. They often go and drum on the metal exhaust pipes (chimneys?) on top of houses. So if you here a metal rattling sound, it might be one.

Boy does it get annoying quick when they start hammering on that metal pipe.

Michelle Summers
The bird that got me started was a Red-shafted Northern Flicker, digging for ants in the yard. That was the first time I saw one, and the first time I saw a bird that was such a work of art ❤️ Here are a few favorite shots...

The Bird Nuts
Great photos everyone! This week's bird is Barn Swallow. @BigOly If anyone else wants to be tagged to be reminded when a new bird is chosen, let me know!

lonestranger
It usually takes me a while to find photos of specific species since most of my photos aren't tagged or organized other than by date. My choice of photo was easy to find this time, I knew one of my earliest photos was still one of my best so I just jumped right to the beginning of my gallery and there it was just a few rows down from the start. Taken back in 2009.
