I couldn't tell at the time. I was contacted by ebird admin. who told me what it was. But, after it being brought to my attention you can see that the white spots are not as bold on the hybrid as on a Spotted. There are also fewer white spots on the hybrid than on a Spotted. Additionally, the Eastern Towhee has a bold white notch at the base of the folded in wings near the chest above the legs, that the Spotted doesn't have. It is present on the hybrid but is not as large or as bright white.

I had the pleasure of hearing one once in Weld County Colorado. I never did find that one but the sound is very distinct. I have seen several now but at that time I think I had only seen one.
