smittyone@cox.net
Seen today at Loess Bluffs NWR in NW Missouri. Are these Dowitchers?
IKLland
Yes, dowitchers. I’m not good enough to tell you Long-billed or Short-billed on these.
Peromyscus
They are almost certainly Long-billed Dowitchers; no Short-billed Dowitchers have been reported from Missouri so far this year in eBird. That species migrates through the state later in the month than does Long-billed Dowitcher. There are several checklists this month from Loess Bluffs NWR with 20 or more Long-billeds.
smittyone@cox.net
This a close crop of the same bunch of birds. Assuming these are all Long-billed Dowitchers, is there any significance to the one lighter colored bird? I have several shots of it at different angles, so I don't think it's a trick of the light. Peromyscus
The lighter colored bird, second from right, is still in winter plumage. The other birds are on their way to acquiring breeding plumage, especially the bird on its right.
