Female Blue-winged Teal?

Recommended Posts

Hello all! Feels good to be back on the forum again!

Anyhow, I was reviewing some of my old photos, when this one caught my eye. (Taken on March 3, 2017 at the Cooling Ponds of the HECO Waiau Power Plant, on the Island of Oahu)

Blue-Winged Teal?

At the center is a Black-crowned Night Heron, but I am not sure about the duck in the bottom left corner. This photo was taken on March 3rd 2017, a time when I was a very inexperienced birder. I ignored it, and assumed it to be a Mallard x Hawaiian Duck Hybrid (most common duck in the islands), until looking at it closely today. Could I have a potential female Blue-winged Teal on my hands?

Thanks in advance!

Given the scarcity, I think I'd want a better shot to say for sure.

Sorry, this is the only one I could find. Will this cropped image help?

I'm afraid I just can't say. I'm not sure what variability there is in the hybrids, and I can't see anything clearly except the face pattern.

I can see what appears to be white on the front of the face, which would be characteristic of a female Blue-winged Teal.

The little white patch near the bird's gape is what first caught my eye. Is it a definitive feature?
