Myrtle Beach Pete Posted December 28, 2018 Share Posted December 28, 2018 Hello all. This bird was in the trees behind my former residence in New Market, MD on 11/16/2014. I cannot determine what is is and would appreciate assistance. I must not be using the identification tool properly yet. Uploaded 10 pictures to assist with the identification. lonestranger Posted December 28, 2018 Share Posted December 28, 2018 This is a Northern Flicker, a type of woodpecker that usually eats ants on the ground instead of pecking for food in the trees like most other woodpeckers. I'm guessing the application may have been confused by all the crossing branches. What app are you using? If iBird, you might want to contact Administrator and make him aware of the issue. lonesome55dove Posted December 28, 2018 Share Posted December 28, 2018 (edited) Yep, Northern Flicker...and this one is a female, Yellow-shafted Northern Flicker [Eastern variety]. She has a gray crown with a red nape patch and yellow under her tail and wings. The males have a black malar. The Red-shafted Northern Flicker [Western variety] have a brown crown and do not have a nape patch, they have red [more like rusty-orange] under their tails and wings. The males have a red malar. ?
