mpfuchs
Hello everyone, I'm new to the group trying to get some clarification on recent sightings. I can't decide between a female Merlin or a Broad-Winged Hawk. This was taken today in central Virginia. Thanks a lot for your help! HamRHead
You've got a Red-shouldered Hawk. Welcome to Whatbird!

I guess that makes sense, given the rust color. Not sure why I skipped over the red shouldered... probably because the tail in the illustrations I compared it to did't quite makes sense to me. Either way, thanks for the ID!
Creeker
Other field marks here for Red-shouldered include the width of the tail bands, the red shoulder, and the black and white checkerboard wing pattern.
