The only thing I have to add is that these were large birds, and the area around the head and neck and just under was thick/wide. Also, from the better look that I got but was unable to capture, I believe the top areas had a lot of white. I got enough of a look at their faces to be certain. I'm very unfamiliar with Night Herons on the wing, as except for one BCNH flyover, I've only seen these birds stationary, so I'm not ruling this out.
