With retirement pending, I'll soon have to turn in my company phone.  I bought a new Samsung a couple of weeks ago, and promptly set the ringtone to a Pileated's "WUK-WUK-WUK-WUK-WUK-WUK-WUK-WUK-WUK".  The sound for an incoming text is the bird's hammering.

MJ changes her ringtone now and then. On one occasion she had changed it without me knowing and then got a persistent caller that called back every few minutes while MJ was out walking the dog. I checked in every room, in all the closets, down the basement, and out around the house trying to find the source of this very familiar sound. When she got back from walking the dog, MJ just laughed at me when I told her that I could hear a cat meowing from somewhere in or around the house but I simply couldn't locate it.

Personally, I like having a unique sounding ringtone, that's why my ringtone sounds like a phone ringing.

Those are probably the same words that @Charlie Spencer will hear the first time his phone rings when he's out with a group of birders. 😄

Ya know, I hadn't thought of that.  I get so few calls anyway.

A bird call as a ring tone? No, every time it went off I'd scramble for the camera.

Yeah, I may have to rethink this.  Blasted thing went off in the woods this morning and I kept trying to spot the bird.  I didn't know how I could be missing it; it sounded like it was right beside me...

The good part is that it was my Mom returning my Mothers' Day call.

I recently made this custom ringtone from my Red Junglefowl observation back in March.  I love the rooster's extra syllable and hoarse voice.  I only set it up around a month ago, so it still freaks me out a little when I get calls.  Incoming calls made me jumpier after I first set it up.

It was a fun exercise as well, as I had to look up the process, which involves getting the WAV file onto my iPhone, then exporting it into GarageBand, before creating and setting the ringtone as default for all incoming calls.

I don't have to worry about getting faked out, as these birds are nowhere near when I normally bird, and I have no other occasion to go to that area.

Now, I'm reminded to set a new custom ringtone for incoming texts. 🙂

I thought it was called a SMART phone for a reason.

A smart PHONE is only as smart as the person using it....for smart things. When it comes to making/taking phone calls though, dumb phones with dumb ringtones work just as good.  Especially for dummies like me that don't really want a computer to make phone calls. :classic_biggrin:

Because some of us are smart enough to use it as a phone?

Hmmmm. I’m gonna hold off on my Boomer rant for now (granted this rant is heavily skewed with data from my own parents).

Ultimately, smart phones should be used primarily as eBird uploading/recording devices. 😉

Rant away!  One of the reasons mine has to ring is because my 88 year old mother makes only voice telephone calls.  She recently abandoned a smart phone in favor of a flip phone.  It's easier to use for that purpose, doesn't have screens she doesn't understand how to navigate, and doesn't have features she doesn't want but kept accidentally activating.

But why wouldn't someone want their phone to ring?

I always want my flip phone to ring, whether I'm at home, in the car, or birding. Mind you, I don't get many calls or texts especially while in the field. But if my phone is in my coat pocket in January, I am not going to feel it vibrating.
