HAFL/DUFL, Sacramento, May 9th

Recommended Posts

I saw this bird a couple of weeks ago and called it a Dusky, but now looking at the photos it seems like a tweener. I'm still reasonably confident it's a Dusky, but the bill and primary projection is causing me some doubts. This bird was seen on a day when I had a minimum of four other Duskies and three to four Hammond's, so both can be considered expected. Just looking for a few opinions here.

What are you seeing specifically that makes you doubt your first impression?

The primaries seem a little too long, the lower mandible appears mostly dark, and the forehead angle is a little steeper than I'd like. Other than that, it seems to fit DUFL well. The eyering is messy, the bird appears small-headed and long-tailed, and the head is relatively flat.

I would say Dusky/Hammonds because there are some things off that doesn't make it a Hammonds and some things that make a Dusky. So for me, Dusky/Hammonds is probably the best bet for this bird.

Tough bird. I would lean Hammond's here. The tail morphology, small tiny dark bill, and spacing between primaries 4-6 all seem very HAFL like. The last photo screams Hammond's to me. Although, at the risk of being a broken record, it never hurts to leave as bird as a slash.

I agree the last photo look very much like a Hammond’s. Photo 2 and 3 look more Dusky-like to me with that long tail. I would probably leave this bird unidentified without hearing call notes.
