TDJenkins
Black or yellow crowned - and what characteristics ID it? Taken today at the Jersey shore. Thanks.
IKLland
Yellow-crowned due to the all dark bill, impression, and plumage. Edited May 25 by IKLland 6
Peromyscus
It's not a juvenile (from this year) ... juveniles of both species have a lot of white spots on their back and wing feathers. Juveniles in my part of Maryland haven't left their nests yet and I suspect they haven't on the New Jersey coast either. It is a Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, as it has the all-dark bill and more graceful, longer-necked appearance of that species.
