Myiarchus species, San Bernardino, May 26th

Recommended Posts

What are everyone's thoughts on this Myiarchus? I thought possibly Brown-crested but that would be unusual in this area of San Bernardino (Barstow Community colllege). No shots of the underside of the tail sadly. Seen a couple hours ago.

Can I ask why? Brown-crested Flycatchers have very thick bills

Seems way to long for an Ash-throated, and doesn't seem as thin as an Ash-throated. I have no experience with western flycatchers, so I am not 100 percent sure. That's why I said IMO

I think it’s missing some feathers around the bill, which could explain it looking “longer”

I've showed these photos to a lot of the other birders I've run into down in the desert over the past couple days, many of whom are super well known California birders, and every single person has said Brown-crested for this bird. Some of these people have been birding the desert close to yearly for decades.

Huh. I’ll text it to my reviewer, if that’s ok with you?
