sbruenjes
I saw this bird last week at the Garret Mountain reservation in Passaic County, NJ. Is it a pine warbler, cape may, or something else altogether?

MichaelLong
A female wouldn’t have black on the throat like that, this is a first spring male I believe. 1
Avery
Just now, MichaelLong said: A female wouldn’t have black on the throat like that, this is a first spring male I believe. Huh? Females can have the black chest, but have a white throat like this bird. 1
MichaelLong
The black on this bird goes across the lower throat, unless I need to check back in my bird anatomy. edit : I now see that females of this species can have black on the throat, I’m used to its western relatives where any bird with black on the throat is a male.
