TexasCobra
What features distinguish the female House Finch from the female Painted Bunting? Both species are common in my area. I have photographed both species of females. I have pulled up images of the two from bird identification websites. I am still unclear about how to distinguish the females of the two species. Thanks for your reply.

Thanks for your reply. One is green, the other is brownish gray with streaks on it, among many other things.
AlexHenry
There’s gotta be some color-blindness going on with this one

Here's a similar view of a female Painted Bunting. https://pixels.com/featured/3-female-painted-bunting-ira-runyan.html

Here is a pic I took earlier this summer which was confirmed to be the female Painted Bunting photographed in my backyard. Notice how it is green, not grayish brown, and how it lacks streakings(when you see it from the front). Many other things as well, including overall shape and impression, wingbars(look carefully at photos to see these minor things), head pattern(house finch has streaks on its head), and some other subtle structural differences. Unless seen in the poorest of viewing conditions, they’re really hard to confuse.

Despite my partial color-blindness (deuteranomaly), your bird's head and back are obviously green, not dull brown like a female House Finch.
