TomFuller
I saw about 70 of these a few hundred yards off shore in Ogunquit, Maine this evening. The pix are terrible (dark, foggy, distant, etc). Sorry about that. Based on head and bill shape, I think these are mostly Black Scoters. Any help in confirming or correcting that ID (as always) is most welcome. Thanks! Avery
The shape looks better for Surf/White-winged to me, and I think I can see the eye comma of a WWSC on a few. Not positive though.
pictaker
I would say white winged/ surf also…. You can see the longer head shape on a few of them….
TomFuller
As usual, this has been very helpful and is much appreciated. I change the entry in eBird to “scoter species”. Also, today, I saw three white winged scoters very clearly as they were flying by. I tracked them in the telescope for about a minute. The white patches in the wings were unmistakable. Thanks again.
