kkozella
I took these poorly digiscoped photos near sunset on Jan. 21 at Lake Monticello near Palmyra, VA. I'm trying to determine if the goose in the middle is a cackling goose. https://www.flickr.com/photos/146543736@N07/32956368078/in/datetaken-public/ Here are some other photos: https://www.flickr.com/photos/146543736@N07/46779745492/in/datetaken-public/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/146543736@N07/46779741012/in/datetaken-public/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/146543736@N07/32956364088/in/datetaken-public/ Thank you for any help that you have to offer! akiley
Looks like a small Canada to me. It's not that much smaller, and the bill looks too long and pointed for Cackling.
millipede
I'd love to see some other opinions on this because I'm not sure I agree. The bird looks significantly smaller to me, and the bill is most definitely shorter than the other birds in the picture. I'd call it a cackling, but I'm not an expert on these things. ? kkozella
I was able to take some photos this morning of what I think is the same goose.
millipede
Looks to me like it could be the same birds. I'm seeing a significantly shorter/smaller bill. And I would call it a cackling goose personally. I hope someone will confirm but that's where I stand. ? Good job getting out and getting better photos. cavan wood
Also not an expert on geese, but with the more triangular bill, smaller size, and shorter neck in the silhouette photos, I think you have a contender. Scott

I'd be okay with calling this a Cackling, although a profile view might help nail it down for sure. Not the most classic Richardson's Cackling, but it looks okay from this photo. I'm still not convinced about the original bird- it has a very Canada-like shape/structure. Generally speaking, it's important to keep in mind that the two do hybridize- Cackling Goose ID is often not straightforward. birdbrain22
The first set of silhouetted pics are probably Cackling, but I would not call it 100% from just those photos. However, the next pic shows a Cackling with the 2 Canadas.
