SmilingBirder
This was posted on Instagram, and the photographer is leaning towards Cooper's hawk, but I'm leaning towards northern goshawk. Either way, a juvenile? Those happen to be the top 2 choices in Merlin ID when it scanned the photo.
Creeker
Ok, it's not an accipiter, so Gos and Cooper's are out. This is a buteo. When was the pic taken?

IvoryBillHope
Not a Merlin, structure and color pattern are both wrong. If taken recently, that's a young Red-shouldered Hawk.

Charlie Spencer
Any chance it screeched often? Young Red-Shouldereds can be quite vocal. Edited January 29, 2019 by Charlie Spencer

Agree but just for argument's sake (and learning purposes), if the picture had been taken in the fall, are there any specific field marks there that would rule out young Broad-winged Hawk? The Bird Nuts
I agree with young Red-shouldered. The contrasting barring on the secondaries rules out Broad-winged.
SmilingBirder
Here is another view. The photographer said she meant to say red-shouldered hawk
