Admin says it was a problem with an upated - I'll quote him because I'm not that familiar with how these things work "behind the scenes"! "The cause was poor security on the Update allowed bad files to screw things up."

Sorry to laugh but the explanation was too esoteric...just had to bust out!

But of course!

I'm hoping @Charlie Spencer or someone with his level of expertise can explain some of the technical jargon, such as "bad files" and "screw things up." :classic_wink:

Well, I have been gone for a long time. Have not had much time for birding as life got busy. I tried to to login a few days ago and found that there had been a crash and to old forum was no longer. I have been a member since somewhere around 2012-2013. I am also a Mod of the Whatbird Flickr Group.

It's good to be back and I hope I can spend more time looking in on Whatbird and enjoying everyone photo's.

We lost the entire site in the summer of 2018, along with all the content.  Everything on the current site was rebuilt from scratch since then.

@Aveschapines  who is running this and why do they NEVER post on here? I love this site, love the community... but somehow it's painful when its down for a few days at a time. Was down several days... up... then down AGAIN...  Sometimes I'll use the contact form on whatbird which is a contact form for iBird really... and they'll get back to me, days after the forum is up again. I've asked them a time or two to have some place to keep people posted. The last time I asked they said there was a FB page but, NOBODY uses it. They said they'd talk to someone about using it to update us but that was several crashes ago and still, there's no place where anyone keeps us informed. When it comes back, there's no posts here saying "hey, we had a problem, it's fixed now..."
I HATE being left in the dark I think.  That communication needs to be improved upon. Why are these crashes happening so often in the first place?

So far the posts keep coming, members bounce right back in after a crash... but, if this keeps happening, and for days at a time, and without communication, people are going to continue to slip away and not return. :(
I myself have been tempted to go find another forum for my birding conversation... or to just create a new one. If I wasn't such an unpopular guy(and was better at marketing, etc) I'd just go create a new birding forum. I keep getting pulled back in here because it's established, not TOOOOOOO HUGE, and I like it I guess. But every time I'm sitting here for days clicking the refresh button to see if something is going to work, I come close to just leaving it and not looking back.

I'm not trying to sound ungrateful or like a complainer. This is just reality. This forum is not being run well, no communication, constant crashes, our suggestions seeming to fall on deaf ears...
The members of this forum are great(MOST of them) and that's all that keeps me here. If there weren't still some dedicated regulars hanging around, this place would be an echo chamber right now.
Sorry for the rambling but, someone needs to say these things.

@millipede, how much are you being charged to use this forum?

that is not at all the point. Just because the use of a website is free doesn't mean that its users have NO right to give feedback. The owners of this site ARE running a business with their iBird app and they USE this forum to advertise it. I have every right to say what I said. And I stand by every last bit of it. If you run a website and have constant crashes and leave your users in the dark, you're going to lose them. This is not me demanding anything, simply explaining reality. This is the reality of the internet. If they want a successful forum, they need to take this seriously. People have already left, in big numbers. That's reality. As I said earlier, this isn't me being ungrateful. I know I'm not the only one feeling this. Some are biting their tongues, some have left and aren't looking back. It's just not a good way to run a website. I hope they'll see my words and consider them and try harder. I hope that they'll be more transparent. I hope they'll figure out why the forum keeps crashing and find a way to fix it or try another forum software. I can hope...  and I don't feel bad saying so. This is the reality of running a website on the world wide web. Satisfy the users or fail. That's a harsher way to put it but, that's how it works.

Maybe it's just my background, but I don't see anyone has a case to criticize something they're not paying for and aren't required to use.  I've run web sites and sometimes they can be a pain in the butt to keep running.  I've seen sites where the operators have decided they're tired of criticism of their efforts and just closed down.

I don't like downtime either, but I don't feel the operators or admins of a free service are under any obligation to the users.  If I don't like the way a free site is being run, I seek alternatives.  So far I haven't found any I like better, even allowing for the recent inconsistent service.

I'm sure you're not, but that is how you're sounding.
