Spring Migration 2019

Recommended Posts

Yeah we started seeing Indigo Buntings at my mother's house about 2 weeks ago.  They typically arrive a little before the rose-breasters.  I had a little black bird on my feeder yesterday afternoon and I swear it looked exactly like a indigo bunting but it was black instead of blue.  It may just be a color variation?  Also, it perched on feeder instead of the ground raising my suspicion that maybe it was something different than a bunting.  If it shows back up, I'll try to get a picture of it.

Has anyone seen a rose-breasted grosbeak yet? They normally show up at my house this week every year.

I had one at Kennesaw Mountain in Georgia this past Saturday, as well as a number of Indigo Buntings.

Still have not seen a Grosbeak yet! ?.  Pine Siskins are still at the house eating thistle so they are staying a little longer this year.  Tons of goldfinches at mother's house plus a indigo bunting that is actually sitting and eating off the platform feeder.  This is a little unusual for a bunting since they normally stay on the ground and eat what is dropped by other birds. This individual is not waiting for seeds to drop.  He is right up there with the cardinals, doves, and other resident birds getting his fair share!  Ha ha!

I am curious to know whether birds living in the wild would make great pets , and possibly survive in a home aviary.  Or does the same rule apply to wild bird as they do with wild animals ?

First, I'm reasonably sure that's illegal with out a license.

Second, they probably due act like wild mammals and for the same reasons.  Evolution and education have given them a set of skills tuned to eat, mate, and survive on their own in nature.  Those skills often conflict with the behavior desired in pets.

Wild birds are wild animals. It's illegal to own them without proper licenses (and even then, I don't really know of any that allow you to own them indefinitely--usually it's just for rehab).
