Hummingbird Feeders Spring 2019

Recommended Posts

Yep they are some fat little things for sure. They seem really unsure about getting on the feeders, like they havent been on them before, so they circle around a few times before landing. I put out 2 more feeders last night in other areas to handle the rush. I wish I would've had this many during the summer months.

If they're migrants, they probably are unsure.  They've spent the summer in the same general areas and know where the threats may come from, where the best perches are to watch the feeders, etc.  Now they're in unfamiliar territory, not staying long enough to get comfortable.

All of a sudden the population seems to of risen really fast.

I am about two hours east from Dallas, I normally see 5-6 a day. The last two weeks I haven't had any hummingbirds, and I have kept my sugar water fresh but no hummingbirds.

About a month ago I was going thru the same thing, I barely was seeing any at all, and then all of a sudden thats when it exploded like it has. I've got 4 feeders out and they are really sucking it up fast. It's really nice to see, but I cant explain it other than migration has begun. I get a lot during migration time.

Yesterday evening about an hour before dark, my feeders started lighting up with some new hummers that I hadnt seen before. This morning they are still around and already fights have broken out over territory. I was just about to take them down today too, but I'm going to let them stay since the nectar is still clear. They may be gone by tomorrow, who knows! Was happy to see a few more for the end of the season ?
