lonestranger
While we're on the subject of presenting changes to the forums, I'd like to suggest that we also ask to have the Edit feature changed from it's five minute time limit back to the old way with no time limit for editing our posts. It's frustrating when you can't correct a silly typo, and even more frustrating when you can't correct a critical typo that confuses those reading it. Lets face it, we don't always notice the obvious right away and it's easy to hit the wrong keys or have auto correct change a typo into the wrong word without us noticing it. If you submit your post and run to the bathroom before reading it, there's a good chance you won't be able to edit your post when you come back if you notice a typo in it. I know that I'm not only one frustrated with the current Edit time limit, I've seen it mentioned over and over again so lets add it to the suggested changes.

I'll second this suggestion...it is extremely frustrating to me for many reasons...misspelled words, re-wording because it didn't sound right after I read it again and changing a photo just to mention a few. ?

I'm not entirely sure what I think. Sometimes sites have a time limit set so that people don't go back and change EVERYTHING they said as it really messes up a conversation. That limit right now IS pretty short though so I'd totally agree with some adjustment to that. So, I messed around comparing the old forums with the new ones, etc and came up with what I think seems good... I wish I could stress the I more as this is just MY opinion... And we can see from discussion so far we all have different opinions on what's "best" for this forum. We all seem to agree that at least a few things NEED changing so hopefully we can come up with something that we'll all be happy with and the admin will be happy with as well. The old forum had a TON of forums for the iBird stuff. I kind of think that can be condensed and generalized. I put it in here how I'd put it but, I'm not them and they seem to want to stress it a big as it's likely a way they make money here. I get that. Anyway, here's what I'd do... Bird Identification ---Help Me Identify a North American Bird ---Help Me Identify a Bird Outside North America Birding ---General Birding Discussion ---Backyard Birds, Feeders, and Food ---Photo Sharing and Discussion ---Birding Trips ---Birding Books, CDs, Courses, and Cool Products ---Articles and News iBird ---iBird ONLY - Help Me Identify a Bird ---iBird Apps - Help and Discussion ---iBird News Off Topic ---Quizzes, Contests, and Games ---Other Wildlife ---Off Topic Discussion WhatBird ---News and Announcements ---Site Help
Charlie Spencer
I'm going to give some love to our sponsors and suggest moving the 'WhatBird' forums to the top, or second at worst; certainly not at the bottom. As to the rest, I still feel 'Birding' is too detailed, that just 'General Birding Discussions' and 'Photo Sharing and Discussion' would be sufficient. I say that based on the minimal number of posts in the other topics. But it doesn't matter too much to me. I'm grateful the site is here, regardless of format. Thanks to @Administrator and anyone else behind the scenes. Edited February 22, 2019 by Charlie Spencer

I hear you there... but... that section isn't even about them a whole lot and, so far, they don't seem to do anything with it. Some websites, including this one, put their main focus at the very top. I think(my opinion) the Identification stuff belongs at the top. Having iBird stuff second would be supportive of them. IF they were active on this site, the placement of the support/news section might matter a little. Personally I like the Birding section I listed. Based on what was active in the old forums and what I think would be beneficial to people. A place dedicated to specific things like discussing feeders and even landscaping... and trips, for planning and reports. Why do I feel like I need to present a case? HA. We're all different and want/need different things. The old forums had WAY more than I listed and back then, almost all of it got used fairly frequently. I'm hoping people will keep this conversation going, sharing their thoughts... and that the @Administrator might take this all into consideration. Biggest things for me is I think a little expansion of topics will help activity here(fun stuff especially) and moving almost all of the pinned topics out of this forum as they're just cluttering the ID section right now. 2 hours ago, Charlie Spencer said: I'm grateful the site is here, regardless of format. I hope I don't sound ungrateful... This is indeed a good resource and I enjoy it. I just don't think the site is living up to its potential these days... I'm hoping we can attract more new members(and keep them) as well as draw a few people back that seemed to have abandoned us. And, I wish we had specific places to hold these conversations better rather than this ID section... would be fun to create a topic and list some of the people that are gone and try to track them down... HA. Oh my brain just never quits... back to trying to submit old checklists to eBird... stay tuned for more ID requests. ?

The Bird Nuts
@Aveschapines Could you move the above post to a separate thread? Thanks!
