Jim Guion
I saw this bird at Pickering Ponds in New Hampshire, June 10, 2018 after going there to see the Wood Stork which was rare or maybe even a first for NH. The bird appeared very large to me and first thought was Brown Thrasher, but that is clearly wrong. However, maybe it just looks very large sine it was up on the fence. The dark coloring, long tail and huge beak make it very distinctive, but I cannot find anything in my guidebooks that match it or even come close. Has anyone any idea as to what it may be? IvoryBillHope
I'd go with Song Sparrow, with some kind of beak abnormality or missing feathers on the face.
Kerri
Fox Sparrow?
meghann
I would expect to see chevron shaped spots on a fox sparrow. It definitely has some sort of beak issue. I'm trying to come up with any other possibilities, but I think Song Sparrow might be the best one.
millipede
Sometimes I think this forum needs free popcorn. My daughter came to look at this and had to go sit down. Said it hurt her brain. HA... I'm having a hard time seeing a song sparrow. The markings look really weird, the overall shape, length of tail, wings, just seem too weird/off for song sparrow. But I honestly don't know what to make of it... so I'll sit back and see what else people have to say about it. ?
akiley
Song Sparrow is correct.
The Bird Nuts
I also agree with Song Sparrow. Birds can look pretty raggedy sometimes.
