Red Cockaded Woodpecker?

Recommended Posts

We just saw cockaded the other day - it has a big white patch on the side of the head - depending on size yours might be a downy?

Here is a picture of ours from three lakes wma

Red-cockaded Woodpeckers have barred backs and large white cheek patches, as Nivalis said.  This is a Hairy Woodpecker.  The bill is much too long for a Downy.

The red 'cockade' on an RCWO is on the side of the head, not a patch on the back of the head like this Hairy.  It's also a much smaller amount of red, barely a few feathers, very difficult to see.
